Cisco produces a complete line of wired and wireless Linksys routers that enable businesses to connect multiple computers to a broadband Internet connection, as well as share files and printers on the network. While configuring access to the Internet or an internal network on a Linksys router is relatively straightforward and takes just a few minutes, setting up access to computers on the internal network from a remote computer or remotely hosted application is not as simple. To do this, you must create open ports and forward them to the computer to which you want to provide access. Though a bit trickier than configuring a Linksys router for Internet access, you can create new open ports on the device in minutes. Tip. If you use Window Firewall or another software firewall on the target computer, you must open the port or port range in Windows as well or the computer will reject the data forwarded from the router over the new port or port range.
To open the port range in Windows Firewall, begin by clicking “Start,” then “Control Panel.” Click “Windows Firewall,” then click “Advanced Settings.” Click “Inbound Rules,” then “New Rule.” Select “Port,” then follow the prompts to open the desired port or port range. Do the same for Outbound Rules to allow the computer to send data out over the selected port or port range.
Linksys routers have a built-in firewall to prevent malicious programs or hackers from entering your network and accessing your computer files. Since this firewall has been set to prevent most programs or applications, you will have to manually configure your router’s settings to allow the programs or applications you want to use.Such applications can be used for Xbox® or PS3™ gaming consoles.
If you want to port forward for games, for example, Minecraft, you are going to want to look for a router that has a port forwarding section that allows you to forward multiple ranges of ports. That's right. Routers allow you to forward a finite number of ports and some allow more flexibility than others.
By setting up Single Port Forwarding, your gaming consoles will have access to the Internet and game servers since this feature allows the router to open specific ports all the time to let requests from a computer in your network to pass through the Internet, and vice versa without any issues. For you to configure such settings on your router, you must retrieve certain port numbers exclusively assigned to your gaming console. You may contact the console’s manufacturer or refer to your Xbox gaming console’s documentation for its specific port numbers. This article will give you instructions on how to set up Single Port Forwarding on Linksys Wi-Fi Routers and Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers. Single Port Forwarding will only allow you to specify one (1) port for forwarding. If you want to forward multiple ports, you may perform Port Range Forwarding. Click for instructions.NOTE: If you want to set up Single Port Forwarding through your Linksys cloud account, click to learn how.To proceed in setting up Single Port Forwarding, you need to have the following:. List of ports needed to be forwardedThe service ports that you need to forward on the router differ on the type of Internet service you’d like to access. Refer to your documentation or contact your console's manufacturer for details.

Static IP Address on the deviceSince Single Port Forwarding needs to be routed to a specific IP Address, you will need to assign a Static IP to the device you would like to forward the service port to. Refer to your documentation or contact your product manufacturer to learn how to set a Static IP Address on it.
If you are using Xbox 360® or PlayStation®3, check the following links for instructions:NOTE: In this example, we'll be forwarding ports for Xbox 360 to access Xbox LIVE® services. See your gaming documentation or contact the console manufacturer for any service port specification of your game.Step 1:Access your Linksys router’s web-based setup page through Linksys Connect. For instructions, click.
If you’re using a Mac® computer, navigate to the Applications folder in Go, and then start Linksys Connect. For detailed instructions, click.Step 2:Click on the Applications & Gaming tab.Step 3:On the Single Port Forwarding sub-tab, fill out the appropriate fields with the correct entries. In this example, we'll be forwarding ports based on the following information:Static IP Address set on Xbox 360: 192.168.0.15Default Xbox LIVE ports:Port: 80, Protocol: TCPPort: 88, Protocol: UDPPort: 53, Protocol: both (TCP & UDP)Port: 3074, Protocol: both (TCP & UDP)NOTE: For assistance on setting up a static IP Address on your Xbox 360, contact Xbox support.Step 4:Under Application Name, enter “xboxlive” for each of the lines that you’ll be working on. You may enter a different name if you like.NOTE: In this example, a total of four (4) “xboxlive” lines were entered.Step 5:Complete the rest of the entries for each field. Start by entering each unique port number inside the allocated fields under the External Port column.

Proceed by repeating the same port numbers under the Internal Port column.NOTE: An error message notification shown below will appear if the port numbers you entered are out of range. Make sure that the port numbers you enter are within the range of 0 – 65535.Step 6:Under the Protocol column, be sure to select the correct protocol for each line.Step 7:Under the To IP Address column, enter the IP Address of your Xbox 360. In this example, 192.168.0.15 is the IP Address of the Xbox 360®. Therefore, 15 is the value we need to enter for each line.Step 8:Under the Enabled column, make sure that each box is checked. After completing the steps shown above, you should now have a screen similar to the screenshot below:NOTE: Adding of ports to be forwarded is only limited to the space allotted on the page.Step 9:After completing all the necessary entries, click.Step 10:Once your changes have been saved, a confirmation screen should appear.
Click on the Continue button to return to the previous page.NOTE: If you’re having issues with the Network Address Translation (NAT) type of your gaming device, click for troubleshooting instructions.Utilizing your networkSingle Port Forwarding enables you to open various network features of your router and expand your connected home. A good example would be adding an IP camera. If you want to access your device remotely (camera, FTP, etc.), enter the current Internet IP / static IP Address of your remote server. For example, when trying to remotely access a camera with an Internet IP Address of 76.84.21.99 through an FTP server using port 21, the URL you should enter on the Address bar should look like the one below:Static IP Example: ftp://76.84.21.99 or 76.84.21.99:21You should be able to access your remote device/server when this is done.Related Articles.
